ABOUT THE CHARITY

The Gemma Louise Newman  fund was established in March 2006 after Gemma’s life was tragically cut short. Gemma was stabbed to death in her car in Wilson’s Lane on the boarder of Coventry and Bedworth. She was only 21 years of age when she died.

Gemma had a strong passion for education and believed that if children were praised for their own achievements and capabilities then that child would have more confidence in wanting to seek more from their education.

After many heartbreaking trips down memory lane the idea of Gemma’s charity was born.

The fund is run by a committee who are-

Kelly Newman- Chairperson

Michele Newman- Secretary

Linda Silverwood- Treasurer

Leanne Silverwood – Trustee

The committee worked along side Nuneaton and Bedworth CVS to build a running structure in which the fund works. From this structure we built our constitution(a document which we must abide by to comply with the charity commissions rules.)

The theory of our charity is simple we just want to advance the schools which are in the area, and help children build confidence and encourage them to want to seek more from their education.

These are the aims that we practice by-

The advancement of education-by providing and assisting in the provisions of awards, grants and resources to schools within Nuneaton and Bedworth, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

To Advance in life and help young people by providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as responsible and mature individuals.

The relief of financial hardship among students living or studying in the area of benefit- by providing such persons with resources which they could not other wise afford through lack of means.

To advance the education of young people, parents and professionals by raising the awareness of knife crime and the weapons culture and other issues which affect the young people in today’s society.

We for fill our aims by fundraising events i.e. football matches, ladies nights, Christmas markets etc and public support i.e. donations.

Gemma’s charity does not receive any support from the national lottery fund.

Nor does any of the staff and volunteers receive a wage for their work or services.

They contribute their skills and services for FREE!

After each year of fundraising we donate money to schools that successfully apply for a grant from the fund. Each applicant must meet the criteria of the fund to be successful this way it is fair on each and every applicant wanting to apply.

Once every year the fund also contributes to the schools by inviting them to take part in the charities award scheme.

The awards are in the form of a shield and are designed to give children encouragement and more confidence in themselves and in their studies. The winning students also receive a small token of thanks for their achievements through out their year.

Without the communities help and support our charity would not succeed in helping young children.

The committee would love to hear from you with any fundraising ideas or suggestions
