ABOUT GEMMA

Gemma Louise Newman was 21 years of age when she was stabbed to death. Gemma had just received her 1st class Honours degree in Accountancy and Finance when her life was cut brutally short.

Gemma had a strong passion for education and believed that if children were praised for their own achievements and capabilities then that child would have more confidence in wanting to seek more from their education.

After many heartbreaking trips down memory lane the idea of Gemma’s charity was born.

The theory of our charity is simple. We want to advance the schools in the area, and help children build confidence and encourage them to want to seek more from their education.

THE AIMS OF GEMMA’S CHARITY

The advancement of education by providing and assisting in the provisions of awards, grants and resources to schools within Nuneaton and Bedworth, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

To advance in life and help young people by providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as responsible and mature individuals.

The relief of financial hardship among students living or studying in the area of benefit by providing such persons with resources which they could not other wise afford through lack of means.

To advance the education of young people, parents and professionals by raising the awareness of knife crime and the weapons culture and other issues which affect the young people in today’s society.

SPLIT SECOND

LAUNCHED ON FRIDAY 9TH JANUARY 2009

Our short film was made to contribute to raising awareness amongst young people of the dangers of carrying knives and the issues of knife crime.

The film makers’ research involved talking to young people and developing a script which reflected their perceptions of knife crime.

The strongest messages coming across to them was how knife crime was becoming normalized, how young people live with the ‘fear of knife crime’ every day, and how they fear that the even the pettiest of arguments will get resolved with knives, whether as a threat or attack.

The film cannot begin to cover the murky and often vague multitude of issues involved in the consideration of knife crime as it intensifies in today’s society.

Laws are vague and misunderstood, sentencing of offenders is inconsistent, grieving families are overlooked, accurate statistics are impossible to find.

All the while, young peoples fears are increasing and the media report more and more shocking and heartbreaking attacks – mainly towards young people by young people.

Made with a young cast from Coventry, we hope that Split Second will become a strong voice to add to all those already demanding that Knife Crime Stops NOW.
